M&Y Interiors provides a comprehensive service that covers everything from project coordination to the final interior finish. This approach is unique in the industry, allowing M&Y to deliver a seamless end-to-end service for their clients.
Nigel Stanley, one of the Directors of M&Y Interiors, leads the project coordination department, bringing over 20 years of experience. Kerry Luis, who recently joined the team, holds a BA Hons in Interior Architecture and works closely with Nigel to manage projects and provide support to clients.
Why did you start offering this service alongside interior design?
Nigel: The service evolved in response to client requests. Customers were struggling to manage the gap between our design concepts and their contractors, particularly due to time constraints. They asked if we could oversee the project for them, providing a more comprehensive service that would involve coordinating all the items ordered through our design service with their contractors. They needed someone to ensure that products arrived on time and were installed correctly, while also managing the overall finish. It was a natural progression for us as a company, as most of our clients were looking for a one-stop-shop service, from design to completion.
How do you work with contractors, and what benefits does this relationship offer?
Nigel: We are happy to collaborate with our clients’ contractors, though we do have a network of preferred contractors we’ve built strong, long-term relationships with. These contractors are familiar with the high standards we expect, having worked with us on numerous projects. Most of our preferred contractors came to us through client recommendations, which has further strengthened our relationships. This is crucial when we are working on tight deadlines, as trusted contractors are more likely to prioritise us, enabling us to meet deadlines without losing time. I can rely on them to increase the workforce if needed, which helps avoid delays. These strong relationships give us flexibility to adapt to any issues that may arise, such as late deliveries or scheduling problems. I can approach the contractors with confidence, knowing we can adjust the plan if needed and keep the project moving forward.
What are the advantages of using a project coordinator?
Nigel: The main advantage is that having a project coordinator helps the project run more smoothly. We are available 24/7 to answer contractors’ questions and handle any decisions that need to be made. Clients can focus on their daily lives and work without being bombarded by minor issues, which we manage on their behalf. We meet with clients to discuss any important decisions and ensure the project stays on track. The project manager helps avoid any gaps in the process, confirming all details with the client before decisions are made, and keeping costs in check. Contractors will always agree to changes, like moving a socket or repainting a wall, but these alterations can lead to unexpected costs. A project coordinator ensures the client is made aware of any additional costs before proceeding, preventing an inflated final bill. Time is often tight, especially when clients have to move out temporarily for the project. A project coordinator keeps control of the schedule, making sure the project stays on track even if delays occur. This reduces stress for the client and ensures the project is delivered on time and within budget.
Why does it work so well to offer a one-stop-shop service alongside the design team?
Nigel: As part of M&Y Interiors, we work closely with the design team and are involved from the early stages of the design process. We have our own storage facility where we can store items ordered for clients, which allows us to manage the flow of materials. We order everything in advance, ensuring that materials are ready when needed. This eliminates delays because we can supply contractors with the necessary items without waiting for last-minute requests. We ensure everything is prepared, from the first fix to the second fix, so the project proceeds without unnecessary pauses. Even items that aren’t needed until later, like bathroom fixtures, are stored in advance, ready for use when required. By staying ahead of the contractors’ needs, we help the entire process run smoothly and ensure that no time is wasted. This level of preparation enables us to offer a truly seamless service from start to finish.
